Course Selection: Students and parents are urged to proceed through the registration process with careful consideration to the selection of courses. Seniors must be enrolled in at least six (6) classes and all others must be enrolled in at least seven (7) classes each semester. Much time and effort is spent in pre-registering and scheduling students in the spring. Classes, requirements, and choices are discussed, and alternatives presented.
There are instances in which a course schedule may be changed. These include situations where a student:
needs to make up a required course.
has an incomplete schedule.
seeks to add a course without making a drop.
is missing a required course.
has changed long-range plans and needs specific courses to meet the college entrance requirements.
has two classes scheduled for the same period.
Credit approval: Prior approval by the principal is required for the following to qualify for credits toward graduation:
Correspondence courses and Internet courses from an accredited school
Adult high school courses offered by Whitewater High School And/or other area schools
Summer school courses offered by Whitewater High School and/or other area schools
College courses may be counted for credit toward graduation. Students should be aware that the grades in these courses are on their permanent university record and high school record. Grades at both institutions may affect subsequent admission to postsecondary programs.
Course Addition/Withdrawal Procedures (after the semester begins): Any student desiring a course drop and add within the first FIVE school days of the semester should report to Student Services. Such a change will be considered only after the submission of a completed Add/Drop form. (Available in the Student Services office).
Drops after five school days of each semester will result in a semester grade of WF. The WF grade factors into GPA calculation equivalent to a grade of “F”. Students who wish to drop the second semester of a full year course may do so one week prior to the start of second semester without penalty, with the approval of their parent/guardian and counselor.
Transfer/Withdrawal: To withdraw/transfer from Whitewater, the student must present a written approval from a parent or guardian to the high school office and report to their counselor and complete the sign-out process which includes:
Parent/Guardian approval
Completion of the withdrawal form
Return of all books and materials to the LMC and sign the withdrawal form
Payment of all outstanding fees or fines
Return completed form to the Registrar
Homebound Instruction: A situation may arise when a student is not in proper physical or mental condition to attend school. A parent or guardian may request that the student be put on a program of homebound instruction. The parent must provide the Director of Pupil Services with a medical statement indicating the reason for the absence, as well as the anticipated length of the absence. This request should be made if the student is expected to be absent from school for more than 21 calendar days. The Director of Pupil Services will oversee an appropriate plan to continue the student’s educational progress and determine the number of visits by the homebound teacher.
Scholarships: State and National Scholarship information will be emailed directly to the senior class and posted on the student services website. Applications are also available in the Student Services Office and must be returned in a timely manner. Seniors are encouraged to contact colleges and universities for scholarship information and research additional information through national websites. Information about the local and area scholarship competition in Whitewater will be distributed to the senior class during a presentation in February. For more information, please refer to the Student Services website.
Special Education: Teachers, counselors, administrators, and/or parents may ask student service personnel to evaluate individual students for academic or behavioral problems. The parent/guardian must sign a consent form before the evaluation is begun. The results of the evaluation are reviewed by a committee including the school psychologist, special education teacher, regular education teacher, parent/guardian, and an administrator. The committee determines whether special education programming is appropriate and writes an individual education program based on the student’s needs.
Section 504: Covers qualified students with disabilities who attend school receiving Federal financial assistance. To be protected under Section 504, a student must be determined to: (1) have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; or (2) have a record of such impairment; or (3) be regarded as having such an impairment, Section 504 requires that school districts provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to qualified students in their jurisdictions who have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Plans generated under Section 504 inform teachers and staff members of the accommodations a qualifying student needs in order to access their educational opportunities.
Non-Discrimination Statement: The Whitewater Unified School District will not deny any person admission to, participation in, or the benefits of any curricular, extracurricular, pupil services, recreational or other program or activity because of a person’s sex, race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation or physical, mental, emotional or learning disability reason or any other prohibited by state or federal laws or regulations.
