System Administrator, WUSD
WHS Class of 2010
What do you do?
I am still in Whitewater working for the Whitewater Unified School District. I am the System Administrator so I do networking, server administration, hardware and software troubleshooting, and other duties as assigned.
How did you get there?
I took every computer class available in High School. I went on to UW-Whitewater and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Management of Computer Systems with a minor in Website Development and Administration. During my time at UW-Whitewater, I worked as an Intern for the Whitewater Unified School District in the Tech Department. After College, I moved to Madison and worked in the Middleton School District for a year as a Helpdesk Technician. I have been back at WUSD for 3 years. This last May, I obtained my Masters of Science in Information and Communication Technology from UW-Stout. My most valuable experiences have been the first computer class I took in High School and my internship during college. Those two experiences have helped get to where I am now.
What advice do you have for current computer science students?
Follow that passion! Working in Computer Science can be extremely challenging but equally as rewarding both intrinsically and economically. My favorite aspect of working in Technology is that every day is different. I have had to work in a lab coat and goggles, hard hat and safety glasses, and a suit and tie. I have had to do coding, pull cables, take apart projectors, install software, spliced fiber, teach classes, and give speeches to classes full of students. The list goes on and on. The constant change keeps the job exciting.
Computer Science is a growing industry that covers a vast array of jobs that can be tailored to fit your lifestyle. I have friends who work from home, work close to home, or have moved to new a city. Some are hardware technicians, programmers, and teachers. The flexibility makes Computer Science a great industry to pursue for any lifestyle.
