"It is a long-term goal of Westwood Regional School District that each student will use this knowledge, these skills, and these experiences to reach his/her potential and thus become an actively contributing, productive member of the global community."
The Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) Team is a building-based team, composed of administrative and instructional school staff and parents committed to supporting students who are at risk in the general education population. The I&RS Team assists school staff by providing strategies and interventions to resolve various academic and behavioral problems in the general education setting. The I&RS Team process provides students with an opportunity to be successful in the overall school environment.
The I&RS Team process is not an automatic precursor to a Child Study Team evaluation. It represents a separate and distinct team effort to provide help via classroom activities. However, some students may be referred to the Child Study Team for an evaluation after an I&RS team intervention is unsuccessful.
What are Intervention and Referral Services( I&RS)?
I&RS is a support system for teachers to assist students experiencing learning, attendance, behavior, or health difficulties in general education. WWRSD I&RS Committee consists of the school administrator(s), school counselor(s), a Child Study Team (CST) member, general education teacher, special education teacher, school nurse, or any other related services personnel who would assist in the development of an action plan. Parents are notified of every I&RS meeting and often are invited to attend.
Along with parent(s)/guardian(s), I&RS Committee develops an intervention plan that may provide alternative strategies, programs, and/or assessments to support the student's success within the general education programs at WWRSD.
What is the Purpose of an Intervention and Referral Services ( I&RS) Committee?
I&RS Committee addresses academic, behavior, attendance, and health difficulties in supporting student learning. The Committee will analyze thorough data collected by the staff on the identified learning and behavioral difficulties of students.
Potentially, an action plan is developed by providing interventions and/or referrals that are based on specific goals to provide support, guidance, and professional development to both these teachers and students.
Parents are actively involved in the potential development of an Action Plan. They also will review and assess the effectiveness of each plan, as needed, and then modify it accordingly.
