Read and reread familiar books to and with your child as often as possible.
Choose stories that follow conventional story structure (ex. beginning, middle, end) and have illustrations that clearly match the words on the page.
Read stories cover to cover with natural reactions and gestures.
Give children the opportunity to reread or retell familiar books as best they can.
Practice book handling skills:
Book Orientation- locating the front, back, and first page of the book
Locating print on the page and differentiating it from the picture
Reading from or pointing from left to right as you read
Point out letters and words in everyday life (ex. while driving in the car)
