The District’s plan is to have new Chromebooks disseminated to individual students in grades one, five, and nine (kindergarten will have class based devices). Students in kindergarten through fourth grade will leave their device in school, while students in grades five through twelve will take their device home each day.
Parents of students in grades five and nine are required to purchase a Protection Plan for the district issued Chromebook to cover repair and replacement costs if the device is accidentally damaged or stolen. The Protection Plan is non-transferable and non-refundable. Once purchased, coverage is in effect until the day the device is turned back into the district or the day the device is damaged, whichever comes first. The cost of the required Protection Plan for the current school year is $30.
The Protection Plan covers one incident (Chromebook or charger); parents may purchase as many Protection Plans as necessary or desired.
The Protection Plan does not cover misuse, neglect, or intentional damage. Students will be responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement to devices damaged through student misuse, neglect, or intentional damage. Intent will be determined by your child’s Principal or Assistant Principal.
The Protection Plan covers accidental damages to power adapters and any loaner devices that are issued to the student in the event that their Chromebook is under repair.
The Protection Plan only covers stolen devices if an official police report is submitted to your child’s Principal or Assistant Principal.
When a Protection Plan is used to cover the cost of a damaged device, parents will have a two week grace period to purchase an additional Protection Plan to cover any potential future damage. After those two weeks, parents will be responsible for any damage.
If you do not purchase the Protection Plan, you are responsible to pay for the cost of any repair(s) for physical damage to the student’s device, power adapter, and any loaner devices that are issued to the student. If the device is unable to be repaired, this may also include the replacement cost of the device.
If a parent is responsible for covering the cost of damage, fines will be issued in accordance with the following scale:
Replacement Charger: $30
Level I Damage: $50 - Camera, Bezel, Keyboard, Bottom Cover, Touchpad, Top Cover, Palmrest, LCD Screen, etc.
Level II Damage: $100 - Two Level I Damages
Level III Damage: $150 - Multiple Level I Damages, Liquid or Internal Damages
Replacement Device: $200
Technology fees may be waived for families who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Please reach out to your child’s building principal if there is any financial hardship.
Technology fees can be paid online through PaySchoolsCentral or via check/cash. Please see below for details regarding the method of payment you prefer:
Online Payment: Payment can be made through our online vendor, www.payschoolscentral.com, using a credit or debit card (electronic checking). A service charge will be added to payments made via PaySchoolsCentral. Please note you will need your child's Student ID Number in order to pay online. Your child's ID number can be obtained from the Genesis Parent Portal. With any questions regarding PaySchools please CLICK HERE for more information.
Payment with Check/Cash: Please place a check or cash made out to Westwood Regional Board of Education in an envelope. Please write the word "Chromebook Protection Plan" in the note section of the check. On the envelope please write the student's name, ID #, and " Chromebook Protection Plan", and have the student bring it to their school main office.
Students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade are not required to pay for a Protection Plan, as they do not take their devices home. Any accidental damage will be covered by the district. Parents in these grades will only be responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement to devices intentionally damaged through student misuse or neglect.
Families in grades five through twelve that have no outstanding technology related fees in Genesis will be considered in good standing with the District and are covered through our Protection Plan for their first potential instance of accidental damage. Students new to the district in grades five through twelve will be required to pay for a Protection Plan prior to receiving their school issued Chromebook.
If you have any concerns related to the payment of these fees, please reach out directly to your child’s school. All technology related fees must be paid in full prior to signing out any technology. Non payment of fees may result in the locking of the student/parent Genesis portal.
