What are the hardware and software specifics of the 1:1 devices?
We use Chromebooks as the device of choice for the 1:1 program. These machines offer long battery life in a light chassis with a small footprint. They are very portable and fit easily on student desks.
What must we do prior to receiving a Chromebook?
All students and parents must read and acknowledge the Chromebook Agreement by signing and returning, or checking-off in Genesis. A $30 district-managed insurance plan must be purchased, before a device will be issued.
Should I get a cover or case for the chromebook?
It is recommended that students in grades 5-12 obtain a protective cover or case, according to their own taste. Padded zipper cases are better because, unlike hard-shell covers, they are more protective, don't break, and won't interfere with opening and closing. Also, a case is more likely to accommodate any make/model of chromebook the district uses in the future. Dell chromebook dimensions are 12" x 8" x 3/4".
How should I store my chromebook when not used for a while?
It is not recommended to keep your Chromebook plugged into the wall for extended periods of time. The best thing to do is to give it a full charge, then turn it completely off and unplug it until you need it again.
Can I use my own device instead of the district-issued one?
No. It is preferred that students use their district-issued devices. A 1:1 learning program is successful when everyone works from an identical platform with identical software. This gives teachers the confidence to develop lessons they know will work for everyone. It also spares teachers from having to troubleshoot different devices while trying to teach a class.
What support is available if I need help in how to use the device?
Teachers and peers are the first resources in helping a student figure out a problem involving the use of a Chromebook. If the problem is technical in nature, a Chromebook Incident work order will have to be submitted, and a loaner obtained in your school's designated location.
What happens if my device breaks?
First, the student must submit a Chromebook Incident work order through Asset Panda. After the incident is submitted, a loaner device will be available for sign-out (see above). The extent of the damage will then be determined, and a course of action involving student and, if necessary, parents will be agreed upon.
What if my Chromebook is lost or stolen?
In the case of a lost or missing device, the main office must be notified immediately. During an investigation, the lost device will be disabled and rendered unusable until a proper course of action is determined.
Will the device have enough power to last throughout the day?
Yes. Chromebooks have long battery life, and, assuming they are fully charged in the morning, should last throughout the school day. If a device should run out of battery power, there are certain times when HS students can charge it in the Media Center. If the battery regularly exhausts a full charge within the course of a day, submit a Chromebook Incident work order indicating such, then pick up a loaner (HS - in the Media Center; MS - Mr. Attanasio's office).
Because this is a district device, does that mean the district is monitoring its use at home?
Yes. All Internet activity is monitored, both in school and out, at all times. The device is meant for schoolwork only, and should always be used in accordance with Board policies. Only the student's wwrsd.org username should ever be used to log in.
How are issues of inappropriate usage handled?
Inappropriate usage will be subject to the same disciplinary procedures as any similar misbehavior would. Such issues are handled on a case-by-case basis by school level administration.
Will I be able to print from my chromebook in school?
Yes. Depending on grade and school, printers and/or copiers are available for student printing.
