In Grades K and 1, we have an early intervention program for students who may need additional practice preparing to read. Students are selected based on Individualized Assessments given as part of our classroom reading program. Other students may enter the program in January, if the classroom teacher requests testing to determine if extra help is necessary. Test scores and reading levels are then compared to the cut off established by the district for reading and /or math assistance.
Students in Grades 2-5 may receive extra small group assistance through a process called intervention or I&RS. The I&RS team has a meeting and makes a plan worked out by the classroom teacher, the principal, and myself. If an academic difficulty is causing problems with classroom work, consideration is given for testing and possible assistance in the Academic Support program.
Assistance may include work in a small group, a slower pace, use of modified materials, "push-in" support in the classroom, previewing and reviewing class work, and skill & drill practice.
Students can be tested and exit the program any time progress is noted.
Because all students develop and mature at a different pace and learn in different ways, inclusion in the supplemental program is not a reflection of a child’s intelligence, but just one of the many programs the district offers to help each child reach his or her full potential.
