HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE
Dr. Heather Frank-Goffe, Assistant Principal
Dear Parents and Community Members:
Welcome to Westwood High School Science!
At Westwood Regional School District, the science department is dedicated to the acquisition of scientific knowledge through observation, experimentation, argument, questioning, discussion, and imagination of scientific phenomenon. We wish to "do" science, not just hear about it. In the words of Albert Einstein... "The important thing is not to stop questioning; curiosity has its own reason for existing." Our teachers wish to instill the quality of curiosity in our students. Be curious, and you will learn science. We wish to "do" science, not just hear about it.
The word science comes from the Latin "scientia," meaning knowledge. But how do we define "science"? According to Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, the definition of science is "knowledge attained through study or practice," or "knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, as obtained and tested through scientific method and concerned with the physical world."
In the words of Albert Einstein... "The important thing is not to stop questioning; curiosity has its own reason for existing." Our teachers wish to instill the quality of curiosity in our students. Be curious, and you will learn science.

What are Pathways?
Westwood Regional Junior Senior High School has instituted a Pathway Program beginning with the Freshman class in the 2018-2019 school year. Some students know early on in their high school careers they want to focus on a specific subject when selecting elective courses. A concentration in a certain area enables students to develop deep knowledge, and it also communicates a strong interest to colleges, universities, and employers. The Pathway Program is completely optional, as we recognize some students want to choose from a wide variety of electives in order to determine which subject areas they like most.

Why did Westwood Jr./Sr. High change its Science sequence to Physics - Chemistry - Biology (Or... Physics First?? There are many reasons, but the main reason is still that its just plain "logical". This document will offer detail reasons and explanations to anyone who still has questions about Physics First.
A signed safety contract must be handed to your science teacher before you take part in any lab exercises. Please read the contract carefully and abide by the rules of the laboratory!
According to NJ state law, students may opt out of dissection in life science courses. Please remember that if they choose to opt out of dissection, they opt out of ALL dissection for the entire year. If you choose to opt out of dissection, this form must be completed and brought to your science teacher by Monday, September 11, 2017.
Safety is a very serious topic when it comes to our students. This letter will explain just how serious we are and the lengths we, the teachers, go to in order to ensure the safety and well-being of our students in the laboratory.
This document should clear up the differences between the new levels of "Honors", "CP Enriched", and CP.
