The NJSLA-ELA assesses and measures a student's proficiency in reading, writing and comprehension skills that are aligned to the New Jersey Learning Standards for their specific grade level. All students in grades 3-5 will take this portion.

The NJSLA-M assesses and measures a student's proficiency in various mathematics standards related to mathematical practices and major domains such as Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Number and Operations—Fractions, Measurement and Data and Geometry. All students in grades 3-5 will take this portion.

The NJSLA-S assesses and measures a a student's proficiency in the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in science. In grade 5, the students study matter and its interactions, motion and stability, energy, structures and processes of organisms, ecosystems, earth's systems, the solar system, and the human impact on our environment.
Only students in grade 5 will take this portion.
