Course Descriptions

3rd Grade General Music (Recorder)

Students will build upon their previous knowledge of rhythm notation, note reading, and musical terms and symbols through a more in-depth study of instrumental music. Using a Recorder Method Book, students will learn the skills needed for playing a woodwind instrument. The Recorder Karate Method is an interactive incentive program used to track students’ progress and achievements as they learn new music and concepts. The 3rd graders participate in a concert in March to celebrate the nationally-recognized Music In Our Schools Month!

4th Grade Instrumental Music Lessons/Band

4th Grade Instrumental Music/Band is the introduction to music performance for elementary students. Building on their musical knowledge from Recorders and General Music, students have the opportunity to learn and perform on traditional band instruments. Students will build upon their knowledge of basic notation and rhythmic reading, basic musical terms and symbols. Students are pulled out of classes once a week based on a rotating lesson schedule to receive individual instruction on their specific instruments. In addition to lessons, band is held during recess once a week where students learn music and perform band literature as an ensemble. As a culmination of their hard work, students will perform two seasonal concerts in January and June.

5th Grade Instrumental Music Lessons/Band

5th Grade Instrumental Music/Band is the second year of Instrumental Lessons and Band where students continue to fine-tune their knowledge on their instrument. Students will expand their note and rhythmic reading skills to an intermediate level. Band students are pulled out of classes once a week based on a rotating lesson schedule to receive individual instruction on their specific instruments. In addition to lessons, band is held during recess once a week where students learn music and perform band literature as an ensemble. As a culmination of their hard work, students will perform two seasonal concerts in January and June.
