Our Music Philosophy

The Music Department Philosophy is based on 5 core areas: Creativity, Choice, Career/College Readiness, Technology, and Community Involvement.

Creativity: Music education offers a unique learning opportunity to explore individual creativity and artistic expression. In the classroom, we strive to stimulate imagination and foster creativity while providing the necessary musicianship skills. Our goal is to build a learning environment where students feel comfortable to explore and take risks.

Choice: Students have exposure to a variety of musical opportunities and experiences. A combination of choral and instrumental ensembles, extracurricular activities, and technology courses allows students to find the perfect musical outlet that fits their specific interests.

Career/College Readiness: Students will gain skills in musicianship correlated to critical thinking and problem solving. They will also ask significant questions that clarify various points of view and lead to better solutions in their future careers.

Technology: Students will be exposed to various types of technology to enhance learning. Throughout all levels, they have the opportunity to use the most up-to-date technology available to enrich their musical development. Today’s students thrive in a technology enriched environment and our department works tirelessly to support this style of learning.

Community Involvement: Starting in elementary school, musical ensembles will perform at community events and venues, including hospitals, libraries and local festivals. These experiences will foster community ties, improve social awareness, and provide students with education that extends beyond the school walls of the Westwood Regional District.
