Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas (CREST) is sponsored by the Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA) and awarded to school counseling programs that meet CREST requirements. CREST is a continuous improvement document that school counseling programs can use to demonstrate effective communication and a commitment to obtaining results.

Social and emotional learning is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Casel.org

Along with teaching social and emotion skills a comprehensive counseling program also includes:
SEL lessons help students acquire the skills listed above in a whole group/class setting. These lessons are based on the standards provided by the American School Counselor Association and the Texas Comprehensive Counseling Model. Some topics include:
Respect, Bully Prevention, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship, Interpersonal Skills, Intrapersonal Skills, Self-Awareness Skills, and Social Awareness Skills
Assists students in planning and evaluating their educational pathways. Transition to middle school begins later in the fall.
Individual Planning:
Individual daily and weekly check-ins
One on One weekly session
Small group lunch group sessions
Small-Group sessions for emotion regulation, family changes, and stress/anxiety
Individual student needs assessment at the beginning of the year
Monthly goal setting and planning
Individual behavior support for regulation of big emotions
Create and implement individual leadership opportunities for students needing support
Addresses the immediate concerns of students through prevention and intervention services. Crisis counseling is provided confidentially within legal and ethical standards. Consultation may result in referral to district and/or community agencies that can best address students' needs.
Responsive Services:
Plan class-specific lessons upon teacher request, e.g. bullying vs tattling
Referral of Outside resources such as individual and family counseling.
Make CPS reports as needed.
Coordinate Angel Tree and Thanksgiving Baskets for families
Train staff on mental health awareness
Attendance Consultations
Provide Grief Camp referrals from families suffering a loss
Attend School Safety training and provide training on suicide awareness
Facilitate a Student lead positive poster club
Includes indirect activities intended to benefit the student. These may include administrative and support services such as Section 504, event planning, and support programs sponsor.
System Supports:
Staff development on topics of the School Counseling program, Child Abuse, Suicide, and making referrals for a student to be seen.
Consult with general education teachers, special education teachers, special education counselor, school psychologist, behavior specialist, and other staff as needed.

The Counselor provides support for students and staff in the areas of social, emotional, and academic learning and an in-depth understanding of compassion, empathy, and grit. The School Counselor accepts a responsibility to help all students through the systematic delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program.
