HiCap Inquiry classes are available for grades 6-8 in Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. Students that have been placed in Highly Capable Program services for 'Language Arts' or 'All Areas' will be placed in these classes based on a matrix of their most recent academic test scores (ie: iReady diagnostics, Smarter Balanced Assessments, CogAT). Students demonstrating the highest need for these advanced services are given priority placement in the HiCap Inquiry classes. These matrices are resorted each year, so placement or non-placement in them one year does not determine the following years' placements.
All students in Highly Capable Program services are noted in Skyward, and all teachers have access to their online Advanced Learning Plans whether they are in HiCap Inquiry or general education courses. The Mid-Levels Campus also has begun using Mastery Based Learning and students are given opportunities to challenge themselves to exceed standards in every class.
Students are placed in the 6th grade Advanced Math course based on a matrix of their math scores on iReady diagnostics and Smarter Balanced Assessments. It is open to all incoming 6th graders and is not dependent on Highly Capable Program services. Similarly, placement in Extended Algebra at 7th and 8th grades is determined through an algebra readiness test students take in the late March of their 6th and 7th grade years.
Inquiry classes often involve projects, partner/small group work, critical thinking challenges, and more. Students are encouraged to ask questions, make connections, think deeply about complex ideas, and help to guide their own learning.
Images in this carousel include debate team preparations in 6th grade HiCap PBL, Shakespeare play presentations in 7th grade HiCap Inquiry ELA, finished projects and choice work time in 6th grade HiCap Inquiry Humanities, and Socratic Seminar discussions in 8th grade HiCap Inquiry ELA.
Incoming 6th graders that have qualified for HiCap services will be placed into a semester-long class called Advanced PBL (Project Based Learning). This class, taught by WVSD HiCap Coordinator Wendy Clark, teaches students more about what it means (and doesn't mean) to be identified as HiCap or gifted. Through a series of lessons and projects students learn more about their own unique strengths and needs.
