Geography Fair Resources

Always remember to Google Like a Pro! Pay attention to the source: Is it reputable? Is it biased? Is it a joke?

Here are some quick links for Geography Fair. Don't forget to check in the library for books, atlases, and almanacs.

For 7th graders, World Geography, World History, U.S. History, and Sociology:

    • The CIA World Factbook -- Compiled by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), this resource includes a variety of facts about every country in the world. Use the drop-down menu on the right hand side to select your country.

  • InfoPlease Country Profiles -- Compiled by Sandbox Networks, this site gives information about most countries in the world.

  • Lonely Planet -- A tourism company, Lonely Planet provides cultural and travel information. Don't get thrown off by the heading "Destinations in Africa." Use the menu on the left-hand side of the screen to select the appropriate region of the world.

For 8th graders:

  • InfoPlease U.S. States and Maps -- Compiled by Sandbox Networks, this site gives information about each of the 50 states.

  • National Geographic for Kids -- National Geographic has some basic information about each of the 50 states.

    • 50 State Quarters Program -- A starting point for researching state quarters.

  • History Channel -- The History Channel has an article on every state in the U.S.

    • Don't forget that every state government has a website. Try searching for your state's name and the word "government." For example, go to google.com and type in the search box Mississippi, government.

    • Many states have tourism websites. They are a good source for cultural information, including festivals and historic buildings. Try searching your state's name and the word "tourism;" for example, go to google.com and type in the search box Mississippi, tourism.

For Mississippi Studies:

  • Mississippi's Government -- Homepage of Mississippi's government.

    • Mississippi Blue Book -- check out the link for "counties" to see county-by-county information. Don't get discouraged at the length of the document. Starting on page 259 (page 7 of the PDF), the counties are in alphabetical order.

    • Visit Mississippi -- the state's tourism website has destinations, including historic buildings and some festivals.
