Science Research A and B Days:
Welcome back WHS students! I am so excited to start this classroom learning journey with you this 2024-2025 school year. And however this start back at WHS may have you feeling, I assure you that teaching you and inspiring you to learn and grow is my greatest goal. These are some of the tips that can help you have a successful start to this school year.
SCIENCE RESEARCH:
This independent study course is designed for students that have demonstrated an interest and an aptitude in science. Students learn how to design and design and conduct original research projects. Hypothesis testing and statistical analysis of data are stressed. Students are required to make a formal presentation of their research project and findings. Participation in a science research fair is encouraged.
What can we accomplish:
We can begin researching, brainstorming and preparing for your independent research project as this time, conducting PROPER background research is the most important thing you will do, YOU CAN DO, for your project.
This class is unique in that there are no tests, no quizzes and no text. Students, you will be required to conduct mature, thoughtful and detailed research that will result in the formulation of your proposal for this year’s research project.
Some of the things that we will be completing towards classroom participation and grading consist of:
Students will be completing journal entries each week as the year progresses. It is very important that they are detailed in what the journal entry requires.
50% /50% Res 1
75% /25% Res 2,3,4
Minors are composed of DAILY grades, such as: completion of daily prompts,, journal entries/brainstorming activities and documenting progress of project completion.
Major assessments (remainder of the 100%) consists of partial project completions (these will be assigned during the course with appropriate due dates based on individual progress - everyone will complete the same work but the timeline may vary), concept maps, formal research article presentations, OTHER research topic papers.
Once an assessment is assigned - IT MUST BE IN ON TIME! I do not accept late work! This is non negotiable. -10 for a day and -50 for any day after that. I will work with you as long as you communicate with me!!
Please reach out to me through email tina.clarke@woodbridge.k12.nj.us with ANY questions or concerns. I am here to help but you need to reach out, unless emergency, prior to due dates and when the issues arise.
Additional information, class requirements and addendums will follow as the class progresses.****
IDEALLY you must complete a research project, poster and presentation suitable for entry to science fairs and symposiums. Failure to ATTEMPT to do so will severely affect your grade. ***Specific details to follow as semester progresses.
Please note contact will be made to parents/guardians to communicate effectively the requirements necessary to maintain a passing grade in the class.
NO CELL PHONES or ear buds during lecture or any assessments! You will be written up for refusal to comply. NO LATES TO CLASS! ALSO - please NO sleeping or heads down on the desks.
You will remain seated when the bell rings. No lining up at the door. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE WINDOWS.
And always remember:
Reach out to your teachers if you are overwhelmed.
Collaborate with peers using respectful language and behaviors
RESPECT the subject matter, your classmates, as well as the teacher.
Be patient with yourselves and your teachers- we are all learning together!
