However, teachers, school counselors, and social workers have little to no time to do more. Therefore, we developed C3 as an online, self-directed, literacy-based, social-emotional learning program. Because we know how difficult it is to include social-emotional learning into the school day, schools may opt to have students complete lessons on their own, have staff lead C3 lessons, or blend the program with staff instruction and self-directed learning.
C3 teaches harassment, intimidation, and bullying prevention; civility and compassion; and cultural awareness. As a literacy-based curriculum, C3’s characters from Pleasant Valley School “grow” with your students as they journey together from preschool to grade 8, experiencing developmentally typical situational storylines that provide your students with real-world learning experiences.

The lessons are highly engaging and interactive. All lessons are delivered via highly engaging videos. All stories are provided in electronic text and audio formats. All responses to exercises are designed to match the grade-level standards for writing proficiency. Pre-K and K students create picture story responses. Grades 1 and 2 create picture-story and short-answer responses. Grades 3 through 8 create opinion and narrative fiction responses. Opinion writing and narrative fiction writing instructional video lessons are included.
C3 is built upon the foundational purpose to identify and label behaviors – not students. Students and staff are taught never to use the B-word. They are taught to use a color-coded common language for the identification of behaviors. Red is Bullying, Orange is Conflict, Yellow is Anger, Green is Kindness, and Blue is Neutral. Students are taught the 3 criteria for a behavior to qualify as harassment, intimidation, and bullying. They are taught the identification of red verbal, physical, cyber, and relational behaviors; orange verbal, physical, cyber, and relational behaviors; and behaviors that do not qualify as HIB or conflict and that are just part of ordinary life.
Pre-K students are introduced to the characters. They are introduced to the color-coded system for behavior identification. And they learn to identify feelings and not to let feelings cause red behaviors.
Kindergarten students review all Pre-K content and learn how to identify red, orange, yellow, green, and blue behaviors. They learn helpful strategies to utilize if the target of red behaviors. The helpful strategies to utilize if the witness to red behaviors. And the helpful strategies to utilize if the aggressor of red behavior. And they learn how to identify and perform an act of kindness.
Grade 1 students review all Kindergarten content and learn how to identify verbal, physical, and relational aggression. And they learn how to identify red verbal, physical, and relational behaviors. And orange verbal, physical, and relational behaviors. And how to differentiate between HIB and conflict.
Students in grades 2 through 4 learn the definitions of civility, compassion, and culture. The 3 criteria for HIB. How to identify if the behavior is HIB, conflict, or neither? And how to identify and perform an act of kindness.
Students in grades 5 through 8 follow the same instructional design and pattern as grade 4 except with more advanced reading comprehension and writing requirements. And more in-depth social-emotional learning themes. Civility lessons include but are not limited to the following topics Stealing, Sexual Harassment, Sexting, Gang Involvement, and LGBTQ. Compassion lessons include but are not limited to Disabling Conditions, Homelessness, Eating Disorders, Self-mutilation, Substance Abuse, and Selective Mutism. Culture lessons include but are not limited to ethnic diversity, religious diversity, and national origin diversity.
