Phonics:
Make sure your child knows letters, letter sounds and numbers!
Have an alphabet chart at home.
Quiz them on their letters and letter sounds weekly during the summer.
Work sounds/sounding out letters into everyday life!
Reading:
Get them ready now! It's never to early to have your child start reading!
Have them read to you if they can. Otherwise, read to them and ask comprehension questions.
Partner read - you read some and they read some (if they can read).
Visit the library often. Our goal is to get them to love books and reading.
Writing:
Have your child write and write often!
Have your child write their full name often during the summer. Please make sure that they only capitalize the first letter in their first and last name.
Have your child "write" about things in the summer. Writing begins with drawing pictures and telling a story using random letters.
Math:
Have your child use numbers every day!
Have your child count to 20 each day to begin. Then go higher after they have mastered it!
Have your child add and subtract using a number line, fingers, and counters.
Health:
Help them become independent and responsible!
Have your child know and respect their rest with a set bedtime.
Help your child independently use and respect bathroom procedures including keeping the bathroom clean and thoroughly washing hands when done.
Teach them to tie their shoes.
Behavior, Behavior, Behavior:
Nothing holds back a child and their classmates' education more than behavioral distractions in class.
Help your child to respect adults, classmates and rules.
Help your child to manage their feelings and stress in a positive manner.
I stress to my students that it is good to say how they are feeling, so that others know. For example, "what you said made me feel sad" or "that hurt my feelings" or "Ms. Troyano, I feel tired today." Practice having them put their feelings into words to minimize frustration.
If the above are practiced and enforced during the summer, students will be ready and prepared for Kindergarten!
Thank you for your anticipated cooperation!
