Student Injuries

The safety of our students is of the highest priority. If your child is injured at school they will be assessed by the nurse and given basic first aid. Be advised that we do not have any diagnostic equipment to assess your child so you may be called to pick your child up to be assessed in the Emergency Department. While we do not like to interrupt their school day, sometimes this is necessary to ensure that the injury is taken care of properly.

If your child is injured outside of school, please notify the nurse before they return to school. Please be sure to speak with the school nurse about the accommodations that your child may need.

Gym Excuses:

A doctor's note should indicate the length of time the student needs to be excused from gym. There must be a start date AND an end date. A parent can write a note to excuse a student from gym for a maximum of two days per school year. The nurse cannot write notes to excuse students from gym unless they have been seen by the nurse and she deems it necessary for them to miss class. All gym excuses need to be brought to the School Nurse.

Brace/Splint/Sling/Cast/Slides:

A doctor's note is required for any student that needs to wear a brace, sling, or cast in school. The doctor's note should state the length of time during which the brace, splint, sling, or cast will be used and/or the date of the next follow-up appointment. The note should also indicate any restrictions that the student may have. In the event of a foot injury, slides are ONLY permissible with a doctor's note, and the slide may only be worn on the injured foot. The other foot must have appropriate footwear.

Crutches:

A doctor's note must indicate the need for crutches and the length of time the crutches are required. This building has stairs---the doctor's note MUST say that the student can use the stairs otherwise a student on crutches without stair clearance will only be allowed on the main floor. This means that they will have to stay in ACS if their classes are on floors that can only be accessed by stairs. It is also important to note for transportation to / from school on crutches it is necessary that the parent/guardian transport the student on crutches to/from school. Transportation will not allow students with crutches on the bus.
