8thGrade Syllabus

You will be learning the following:

Review of Unit 1 and 2A (Beginner material) 

1. Basic Greetings (Vocabulary): Learn greetings like "Hola" and "Adiós". 

2. Introductions (Communication): Introduce yourself using "Me llamo" and ask names with "¿Cómo te llamas?". 

3. Gender of Nouns (Grammar): Understand that nouns in Spanish are either masculine or feminine. 

4. Articles (Grammar): Use definite and indefinite articles: el, la, un, una.

5. Numbers 1-30 (Vocabulary):  Count from 1 to 30 in Spanish.

6. Subject Pronouns (Grammar): Know pronouns like yo, tú, él, ella. 

7. Present tense of the verb SER (Grammar): Learn the forms of "to be"; soy, eres, es, son, somos. 

8. Telling Time (Communication): Learn to tell time: "Son las tres". 

9. Days of the Week (Vocabulary): Know the days: lunes, martes, etc. 

10. Classroom Objects (Vocabulary): Learn nouns like “la mochila” and “el borrador”. 

11. Present Tense of -AR Verbs (Grammar): Learn to conjugate present tense verbs like “hablo” and “estudiamos.” 

12. The Verb Gustar (Grammar): Use the verb gustar to express preferences. 

13. Academic Courses (Vocabulary):  Learn the names of classes and places in school. 

14. Question Words (Grammar): Use words like "¿Qué?", "¿Dónde?", and "¿Cuándo?". 

15. Formation of Questions (Grammar): Construct basic interrogatory statements: "Que clases tomas?.” 

Unit 2B: En la Clase 

1. Classroom Objects (Vocabulary): Learn nouns like “la mochila” and “el borrador”.  

2. Introductions (Communication): Greet a new student and get to know him/her by asking and answering questions about classes and schedules. 

3. Daily Routines (Communication): Interact (at a survival level) with a new student and talk about classes and school schedules. 

4. Present Tense of -AR Verbs (Grammar): Learn to conjugate present tense verbs like “hablo” and “estudiamos.” 

5. The Verb Gustar (Grammar): Use the verb gustar to express preferences. 

6. Academic Courses (Vocabulary):  Learn the names of classes and places in school. 

7. Present Tense of Estar (Grammar): Learn forms of the verb "to be" to describe location. 

8. Numbers 31 and Higher (Vocabulary): Describe important dates in the school’s yearly calendar and compare them to those in a Spanish-speaking culture. 

9. Question Words (Grammar): Use words like "¿Qué?", "¿Dónde?", and "¿Cuándo?". 

10. Prepositions and Adverbs Used With Estar (Grammar): Using "delante de" and "cerca de" to describe the location of objects and places in the school. 

11. Cultural Facts (Culture): Identify some iconic cultural products of Spain related to everyday life, such as food, dance, art, and language diversity.

Unit 3: La Familia

1. Family Vocabulary (Vocabulary): Terms for different family members and their relationship to each other (madre, padre, hermano, hermana, abuelo, abuela )  

2. Descriptive Adjectives (Grammar): Describing the physical appearance of family members using adjectives                                

3. Names of Professions (Vocabulary): doctora. ingeniero, dentista, artista 

4. Possessive Adjectives (Grammar): mi, tu, su, nuestro, vuestro 

5. Introductions (Communication): Introduce my family to a friend. 

6. Ser and Estar (Grammar): Basic present tense conjugation of ser and estar 

7. Family Relationships (Communication): Describe a family tree and ask/answer questions about family. 

8. Daily Routine (Communication): Describe activities on a typical day. 

9. The Verb Tener (Grammar): Learn present tense of "to have": tengo, tienes... to express age.

10. Family Descriptions (Writing): Write a short paragraph about family and make comparisons between families.

11. Diphthongs and Linking (Pronunciation): Introduce strong and weak vowels. 

12. Present Tense of -ER and -IR Verbs (Grammar): Conjugation of high frequency -er and -ir verbs. 

13. Present Tense of Venir (Grammar): Basic conjugation of the verb "to come" to describe someone's country of origin. 

14. Expressions with Tener (Grammar): Describing fear, hunger, thirst, etc 

15. Cultural Facts (Culture): Family structure in Spanish-speaking cultures. Learn about the Spanish Royal Family. Cultural traditions related to family in Spanish-speaking countries.       Identify aspects of the geography and culture of Ecuador.
