English 11 Course Overview
English 3 Resource courses are designed to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in strengthening essential reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills. The course aligns with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards while offering a modified, structured, and supportive learning environment tailored to each student’s individual needs and goals.
Using a blended digital and print curriculum, students engage with a range of American fiction and nonfiction texts that promote comprehension, critical thinking, and real-world connections. Paired readings and multimedia resources are incorporated to provide background knowledge, increase engagement, and make content more accessible and relevant.
Instruction is differentiated to align with students’ strengths, interests, and IEP goals. Reading accommodations may include text read-alouds, pre-teaching of vocabulary and key concepts, visual supports, guided and modeled reading strategies, annotation prompts, structured discussions, and extended time for assignments and assessments.
Writing instruction focuses on helping students respond to literary and informational texts using textual evidence. Students practice writing short responses, constructed paragraphs, and introductory literary analyses with targeted support. Writing accommodations may include step-by-step instruction, color-coded graphic organizers, sentence starters, transition word banks, individual conferencing, and ongoing feedback to build confidence and independence.
Throughout the course, students continue to develop grammar, usage, mechanics, speaking, and listening skills within the context of the texts studied. The overall goal of the English 11 Resource courses is to promote steady growth in literacy skills, foster confidence, and prepare students for the academic and communication demands of high school and beyond—within a caring, supportive, and structured learning environment.
