English 10 Course Overview
English 10 Resource and Self- Contained classes are designed to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in building essential reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills. The course follows the New Jersey Student Learning Standards while providing a modified and supportive learning environment tailored to meet each student's unique learning needs.
Through a blended digital and print curriculum, students will engage with both fiction and nonfiction texts to develop comprehension and critical thinking skills. Paired readings and multimedia resources are used to provide context, promote engagement, and make content more accessible and relevant.
Instruction is differentiated to align with individual strengths, interests, and IEP goals. Supports and accommodations may include: text read-alouds, pre-teaching of vocabulary and key concepts, use of visual aids, modeled and guided reading strategies, prompts to support annotations and discussion, and additional time to complete assignments.
Writing instruction focuses on helping students respond to literature and informational texts using textual evidence. Students will work on writing short responses, constructed paragraphs, and basic literary analyses, supported by: step-by-step instruction, color coded graphic organizers, sentence starters and transtion word banks, and individual feedback and conferencing.
Overall, the goal of this course is to foster growth in literacy skills, build confidence, and prepare students for the academic and communication demands of high school and beyond, within a supportive and structured setting.
