TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I believe the purpose of education is to equip students with the confidence, critical thinking, and curiosity they need to navigate and shape the world around them. As an art teacher, I aim to cultivate technical skills as well as voice and agency. Every learner brings unique strengths, lived experiences, and learning needs to the classroom. My teaching philosophy centers on the belief that all students deserve an inclusive, meaningful education that celebrates diversity, fosters equity, and empowers them to see themselves as capable creators and learners.

Students learn best when they feel seen, heard, and valued. To support this, I will create a classroom environment grounded in respect, trust, and emotional safety. I will take time to understand students' cultures, interests, and goals. I will also ensure that materials and examples reflect a wide range of artists and art forms. By including voices beyond the traditional Western canon, I hope students will see that their identities, stories, and perspectives belong in the world of art.

Just as I value creative and emotional development, I also believe in supporting academic excellence. I am committed to designing developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences that meet students where they are while pushing them to grow. I want students to leave my class with the confidence, resilience, and academic habits that will support them in any path they choose to pursue.

In my class, art will serve as a vehicle for communication, exploration, and empowerment. In addition to mastering technique, students will use art to think critically, express identity, and engage with the world. I will provide opportunities for choice-based projects that encourage students to explore themes that matter to them. 

Teaching, to me, is a continuous process of reflection and learning. I recognize that my own background, assumptions, and teaching choices shape student experiences, and I will stay committed to ongoing professional learning to better meet students’ needs. I will use student feedback, performance data, and peer collaboration to evaluate and improve my practice. By seeking out new tools, research, and culturally responsive approaches, I can better support the diverse needs of students at CMS.

Education equips students not just with knowledge, but with belief in themselves. I teach art because it transformed me and I know it can transform and lift others. I will do everything I can to ensure every student leaves my class feeling like an artist.
