What is ASAP-NJ?
ASAP-NJ is The Association of Student Assistance Professionals of New Jersey. The first organization in the U.S for Student Assistance Professionals. Student Assistance Counselors are formally known as Substance Awareness Coordinators. The association was said to be founded in 1983. In 1990, The New Jersey State Department of Education was given a federal grant to fund a training program for school district substance awareness coordinators. This funding enabled 65 school districts to hire 69 full-time substance awareness coordinators. This is where "the original 69" comes from.
