Welcome to Our English Language Services
Washington Township is committed to helping every multilingual learner thrive academically and socially while developing strong English language skills.
To better meet the needs of our multilingual learners, we have three dedicated ESL magnet schools for students identified for services: Bells Elementary School (K-5), Orchard Valley Middle School (6-8), and Washington Township High School (9-12). These magnet schools provide targeted ESL programming for students across the district.
For our youngest learners in preschool, ESL support is provided through a consultation model, with ESL teachers collaborating with classroom teachers and providing direct support to students as needed.

English Language Support Models in Our District
Washington Township uses two main models of instruction to provide English language support for multilingual learners: Push-In and Pull-Out.
In both models, students receive daily instruction from a certified ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher. ESL instruction is designed to be systematic, explicit, and focused on helping students meet academic standards while building strong English language skills.
Our district offers two main models of ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction: Push-In and Pull-Out. In both models, ESL teachers provide daily language instruction that is systematic, explicit, and aligned to New Jersey’s academic standards.
Schools select the most appropriate model for each student based on their English Language Proficiency (ELP) level, social-emotional needs, learning style, and other individual factors. ESL teachers may work with students individually, in small groups, or with an entire class depending on what best supports their language growth.
In the push-in model, the ESL teacher joins the student in their regular classroom to provide language instruction during the school day.
For example, the ESL teacher may work with students during reading time or center activities. The focus is on supporting language development within the regular classroom lessons. The ESL teacher and classroom teacher work together to make sure instruction matches students' English proficiency levels and learning needs.
Push-in services often allow for close collaboration between the ESL and classroom teachers, sometimes through co-teaching, to better support all students.
In the pull-out model, students leave their regular classroom for a short time each day to receive ESL instruction in a small group setting with the ESL teacher.
Instruction in the pull-out model is based on New Jersey's academic standards and is designed to support English language development. While students are learning English outside of their regular classroom, teachers work to make sure connections are still made to the content being taught in class.
Both models ensure that students receive the required daily ESL instruction, and both are designed to help multilingual learners grow academically while developing their English language skills.
If you have questions about which model your child is receiving or how ESL services work in your school, please contact your building principal or ESL teacher.
