Spring sports preseason is arriving quickly here at Red Land High School. If you’re looking for a spring sport and you want to learn something new, going to the open gyms could give you a feel for the sport and maybe even help you decide to try out for the team!
Anybody is welcome at open gyms, regardless of experience/skill levels. Open gyms will consist of basic fundamentals, rules of the game, and overall gameplay. To be prepared, make sure to bring a water bottle and sneakers. The drills that will be run depend on the number of students that show up, so the more the better.
Open gym dates for January-February:
Tuesday 1/13 5-7pm
Sunday 1/18 4-6pm
Monday 1/20 5-7pm
Sunday 1/25 4-6pm
Monday 1/26 5-7pm
Sunday 2/1 4-6pm
Monday 2/2 5-7pm
Returning players are excited for the upcoming season after the success of the team in the 2025 season. With a 15-4 record, a hard fought first round playoff exit doesn’t reflect the efforts of the entire team throughout the season. Multiple big games like the 3-0 sweep against Mechanicsburg, the 3-2 win against Chambersburg, and 3 hard fought games against Palmyra kept the energy of the team high while maintaining a positive environment for all of the players. Returning seniors, Cole Myers and Chase Piazza, are ready and hopeful for another season full of success.

Things are starting to look up for the possibility for Red Land to get their own turf field. After all, many sports teams have expressed their unwillingness to constantly travel over to Cedar Cliff for their own practices. especially when those practices interfere with Cedar Cliff’s practices, as it did when both Cedar Cliff and Red Land made the playoffs this year for football.
At a board meeting on January 7, 2026, Brett Sanders, Director of Operations and Planning for West Shore School District, shared some details about the future field. The field will be located in between the baseball field and the track. He shared that construction will start in the summer of 2027. We will not be using a bid contractor and will go with Fedavia or McClure. He also included that we will be getting new tennis courts as well, which will be between the girls soccer field and softball field.
Athletes of Red Land are happy to hear that we are getting a turf field. Cole Myers, a senior football player, said, “I think it would be nice because you’re not getting dirty, you know all that stuff, not slipping on the grass field”. Cole also agreed with the statement that turf is better than a grass field.
The future is looking bright for Red Land’s sports program. The addition of a turf field and tennis courts will improve the training experience for the athletes and save them some gas money.

The Red Land/Cedar Cliff rivalry is one many in this area are familiar with, and love. For the last 13 years, Cedar Cliff has dominated ours truly Red Land High School football team, and for the 13 years we've been trying with all our heart to beat them but have fallen short everytime. At the beginning of the 2025 football season, our football team surprised everyone. In a teeth clencher game ending with the score of 17-14, Red Land defeated the Cedar Cliff Colts. Freshman Tyson Kirchner, who kicked the game winning field goal, said, “With the new coaches stepping in, they brought a new energy to this team and really put in the work to help us be the best we can. And, we’ve been working a lot harder this year and have been taking practices very seriously this year unlike past years.” He also said, “I believed I was there for a reason and I knew I would make the kick, even though I sprained my ankle bad in the third quarter, stepping up to the line to kick the ball, I blocked everything out and all I saw was the ball and I kicked it.”
As of this publishing date, they have defeated Waynesboro is a huge win of 56-14 and are still undefeated.. Our team has beaten Lower Dauphin and Gettysburg High School in polarizing games where our defense and offense has showed up in big moments. We also interviewed the star quarterback, senior Quinlin Shearer who said. “I think the desire and the will to win and, the bonding between our teammates and our coaches was definitely far greater and different compared to years past.” Quinlin and his back field have been piecing up defenses too. Running back, sophomore Eli Philips said, “The new coach had the biggest effect…the coach prior didn’t really do much as a team. It was more just football and not family related as it is now, which makes the team better.” Overall this years’ team is one to be noticed. GO RED LAND!!!!

We interviewed the athletic director, who used to be the football coach, about his opinions of Friday night's game against the Mifflin County Huskies went. Red Land had made the playoffs prior to the games outcome, but due to our loss we will not be hosting the playoff game; instead we will be playing at Mechanicsburg who are 9-1. “We had a couple of injuries and Mifflin County is a good team, but due to the injuries and just because Mifflin County played good football we lost.” “Part of the reason was blown assignments, but the effort was still there.” Although there were a lot of flags, he stated “we're gonna need to play better football Friday night - “Penalties reduced and turnovers reduced.” “Overall we lost so we definitely have to play better.” Overall we made the play offs for the first time since 2016 and the players are feeling the pressure. We asked a star player Quinlin Shearer his thoughts on the game and the playoffs, and he stated, “it was a tough game but we are gonna bounce back this week.” We ended up losing but it was one of our best seasons to date. Hopefully the upcoming season is just as good and maybe even better.
