Reading Strategies to Practice at Home:

• Activate background knowledge BEFORE reading
• Ask your child the genre of the story
• Make inferences - use what you know AND what you read to understand what is happening in the story
• Make predictions before and during a story as you read
• Use context clues
• Use graphic organizers
• ALWAYS reread the text
• Visualize - things like setting and characters
• Summarize the story with your child
• Think aloud as you/your child reads a book, model what you are thinking as the story is read
• Take a "picture walk" before reading (if applicable)
• Ask your child things like what the author wanted us to know, author's purpose, moral or lesson of the story, etc.
