School counselors work with students to help identify interests and skill areas that might lead to specific career fields. While it is not necessary for students to select a career choice while still in high school, it is often useful for students to have career goals when making decisions about the future (college, technical training, millitary, work force) and work toward meeting those goals in school. This knowledge can help students make decisions about what classes to take in high school and can be a motivation factor for academic achievement.
