Student Leadership team has listened to the voice of their peers and we will be starting to do a 3-6 lunch together in the gym on Tuesdays. Many students wish to have more time to engage with each other on a more social level and the student leadership team felt this would also help condense the chatter that happens during our leadership meetings. When we problemed the solved the issue of talking more then planning/doing at our student leadership lunches. Students were quick to point out the lack of time they all have to see a friend in another classroom. So starting this coming Tuesday February 3rd students grades 3-6 will be eating lunch in the gym as a whole group.
The amazing part about this lunch is how our student leaders have problem solved ensuring our gym is put back together in a way that it is useable after lunch with various student leaders taking on the role of table checker and floor checker. Another student leader will be help students in the 3/4 get back to their class in a timely manner. As well as problem solving any situations that could occur during this time period that can create challenging behaviors.
There will undoubtedly be some things that will need to be worked out, but I'm excited as is the rest of the leadership team in seeing everyone come together once a week to share a meal together.
The Student Leadership team is open to students grades 3-6. With students in the 2nd grade having the opportunity to shadow towards the spring semester.
This is a team that allows students the opportunity to work through the process of having an idea and bringing it to fruition.
Our student leadership team has done some pretty impressive things since it began 5 years ago. Every year brings about change based on who is participating and the ideas that come with them.
We also have certain events that run annually and each year the student leadership team works on bringing about changes, or building on top of the traditions these events have already established. These events are;
Harvest Festival in the fall
Day of Play - (typically last Friday before Feb vacation)
Maple Festival in the month of March
New to this year -
Science Festival - this is still in the works, but looking to take place around February 20th, potential pair up w/day of play.
Ideas that students have had this year:
Making milkshakes to raise money - Students did this during the harvest festival. They came forward with the shopping list, volunteered for positions like being the main one in charge, ones who would make the milkshakes, take orders and deliver the orders to the customers. It was a huge success and I was extremely impressed and proud of what a good job they all did who participated in this process.
School Dance - We have yet to make a date for a school dance or go beyond the discussion stage, but I know for many students this would be a fun thing to do. The dance would be for grades 3-6, and we will keep you up to date as soon as we know more.
Science Festival - this is in the works for February 20th, a 5th grader stated she had always had a dream that we could do different science experiments, or science related learning for a day and we are working hard on making this come to be.
Day of Outdoor Learning - Several years ago students a part of the student leadership team made a whole day out of outdoor learning. Students moved from one outdoor classroom to another where different forms of academic learning took place. Then they each ran a recess station and towards the end of the day some students ran a whole school soccer game. It was a great day and the students learned a lot from doing this. Our struggles in bringing this back has been the amount of extra activities we have scheduled towards the end of the year and due to students wanting to have the option of going into the brook. Means it needs to take place when weather is warmer and that is as always dependent on what type of spring we are having.
Parent, guardian, grandparent and community support is always welcome for these events being put on by our student leadership team. If there is an event that you are interested in helping out with please feel free to contact myself (Annalise) at
