Demolishing the garage was important to us because we wanted to create something new in its place. While demolishing it I learned to pay a lot of attention to my surrounding in the workplace and where specifically I'm stepping. While demolishing it there was nails all over the place, broken glass on the ground, and broken wood that had sharp points sticking out.
Leveling Dirt
We used a steel tamper to level the soil surrounding the area then we put a layer of landscaping foil on top of the soil. The landscaping foil is important because it keeps out pests and helps keep the soil moisturized. After the layer of landscaping foil we layed gravel on top of it. The gravel allows water to pass through and be absorbed the the soil. Its important to level the area for many reasons, one being so water doesn't get trapped in one area.
Laying Gravel
On the first floor it is very important to make sure everything is level and sturdy. The first floor is the base for what's to come, if it is not level it can cause problems later down the road. Through this, I learned how to build a wall and do rough framing.
Putting up plywood allows the walls to come together making them more sturdy and of course more "wall like". We put pressure treated plywood around the bottom of the cubical help withstand any water that may reach it.
The tape goes in between the seams of all of the plywood to help keep water and pests away. The walls are then wrapped with typar building wrap and taped within those seams aswell. The building wrap helps stand against the weather and pests aswell. I learned how to screw down plywood, apply tape, and apply the typar building wrap correctly. This is where I really learned how to use an impact driver
The overhang on the left side of the garage is for parking cars. It helps keep the vehicle out of the weather and can house multiple cars. There was not really anything that technical when It came to this part of the build. There is a pillar on each side of the overhang to keep it sturdy and upright beauase there will be no studs or plywood to assist it. The overhang will also have a roof on the top which is slanted so water cannot collect on the top of it just as the roof of the garage will.
The second floor follow the same suit as the first floor; until you get to the roof part. Once the roof starts to be built it gets more tricky because it's slanted so you have to start cutting the wood at a slanted angle adjacent to the roof. I learned when you'r cutting wood not to cut at the lowest measurement first and to give yourself some room to work with. For example. if you were to cut the lowest you could've cut and then you notice your cut was too short you can't add any back so it's almost better to have too much and make minor adjustments if needed.
