George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 at Bridges Creek, which was later known as Wakefield, in Virginia. His father died when he was only 11 years old. After his father died he spent the next few years with his mother at Ferry Farm near Fredericksburg, with his relatives in Westmoreland, and with his half brother at Mount Vernon. He had a powerful family and he inherited both property and social positions. Washington had a rudimentary education by the time he was 16.
George Washington was married to a widow named Martha Curtis. Martha already had two children when they got married, and Washington took being their stepfather very seriously. Unfortunately, his stepdaughter died at age 17, and his Stepson also died young at age 26. After his stepson died Washington practically adopted two of his four children.
Washington is most famous for being the first President of the United States. Not only that, he was appointed county surveyor and he became colonel and commander in chief of all Virginia troops. He was also appointed as a major in the Virginia Militia.
Washington died on December 14, 1799 of a throat infection called Epiglottitis. He was President for eight years and while he was alive he may have been the most famous American in the world.
