I did multiple job interviews in an attempt to decide what environment I wanted to work in in the future. I also chose to do interviews over shadowing because in the social work profession, there would have been a lot of complications with confidentiality.
This is the email template that I used as a format to email all of my possible interviewees.
Linda is a social worker at the high school who has a specific role of meeting with scheduled students; her dynamic is similar to a therapist, just in a school. Linda has a pretty set and tight schedule as she meets with 45 students each week, and there are exactly 45 periods in a week; therefore, she has a different student each period.
Ali is also a social worker at the high school; however, she holds more of a drop-in setting, which makes her job slightly more unpredictable. Ali meets with kids who just need to pop in and take a break, and kids who need to talk it out. Ali's space is very free-flowing and very adaptable to what her students need in that moment.
Morgan is a school counselor at a local elementary school. She works at a very small school and is therefore much more involved in everything going on; she is also regularly in and out of classes. Morgan is very involved with parents, as that is very necessary at the elementary school level.
After going through this interview process, I feel confident that I want to work in a high school, rather than an elementary school. One thing that Linda expressed to me, and I agree with, is that high school students are much easier to make real connections with because they can have real conversations and there's a certain amount that a teacher can actually relate to a student and vice versa. However, one thing that I really did like about the elementary school was the tight community feel, as it was a very small school. In terms of position in the high school, the setup that both Ali and Linda have attracted me. Having scheduled sessions throughout the day seems somewhat organized, and I think I would enjoy the one-on-one time. On the other hand, having kids drop in and out throughout the day seems like it would keep things interesting and I would enjoy the free-flowing environment.
