I am a senior at Brattleboro Union High School, where I play soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. I also love hanging out with my friends and family, as well as my dog, Lexi. After high school, I want to get my Bachelor's degree and then go on to earn my Master's degree in social work.
I chose to take a Flex class this semester because I was unsure about what I wanted to major in and ultimately do for the rest of my life. This Flex class helped me determine that through research, interviews, and lots of organization. I also used this block to focus on my college search, which helped immensely with my time management and productivity. Although I could've done this through a block off in my schedule, I chose to challenge myself with a little extra accountability.
In Flex classes, the roles are almost reversed from a typical high school class. Instead of the teacher being in control all the time, assigning work, giving deadlines, etc, the student is making most of the decisions. The decision-making is typically 80% the student's and 20% the teacher's. This pushes students to have more accountability and responsibility when it comes to managing their work and time.
This class directly relates to my goals for after high school. I have worked throughout the semester to decide what I will major in for my bachelor's degree and eventually my master's degree. I have also effectively used this class to apply to and get into multiple colleges, including, but not limited to, Montana State University, University of New Hampshire, and University of Nevada-Reno. I feel organized and very on schedule when it comes to the college process, which is due to the productivity this class brought me. I also used this block to explore which age group I want to work with (elementary school or high school) by interviewing social workers/school counselors in each age group.
I started the semester with my college application process; the following page shows the details of that process.
