FLEX Intro--
My name is Ayanna Chivers, I am an 18-year-old attending 12th grade at BUHS. A few things I enjoy to do is, drawing, listening to music, painting, spending time with loved ones, and traveling. All of those hobbies give me a piece of mind, and that's important to me. After school, I will apprentice at Scissor Master's salon, and become a cosmetologist. I will be in the workforce, working two jobs to be able to pay for my car payment and my apartment. After receiving my license I would like to continue my education by taking other courses on different certifications like, estheticians.
WHY FLEX: I am taking Flex to retrieve 4 elective credits that I need to graduate. With Flex I was able to count my work hours at McDonald's as partial credit, so if you are a working student look into this class! I chose Flex because I could decide what I wanted to learn, and my school counselor recconended it to me since I was working.
FLEX Structure and Process: This class is much different than any other class I've taken throughout my years of school. During flex, I was able to choose what I wanted to learn and how I wanted to display what I gained. I was able to choose anything I wanted as long as it was school-appropriate, you could show it through movies, you can do interviews, slide shows, videos, posters, or anything that would make you want to and not feel like you have to work. This class also makes it so you can earn credit for working at your job, so half of that credit you would have had to make up is already made up by your job. I met with Kathy Thielen every other day to discuss projects and interests, as soon as I left the classroom room it was up to me to put those ideas together in an organized appropriate manner. Flex makes it so you can do just about anything that works for you, and that is convenient to you.
Verification of Work Hours- I worked at McDonald's -I work about 15.70 hours each week, if I called out one day I worked 9.33 hours a week. I have worked 267.05 hours in total from the start of my flex class. This information was verified by Kathy Thielen.
Post-high school plans:Does your flex class overlap with any of your post high school plans/hopes?
My post-high school plan is to become a cosmetologist. I will be apprenticing a Scissor Master's Salon where I will get the education needed to acquire a license. While apprenticing there I plan to keep my job at McDonald's working part-time to be able to afford a car and apartment, along with other needs. With this money I make I will invest into something to make my money grow. After I receive my license I would like to continue my education in cosmetology learning more about skincare. My flex class has helped me gain more information on cosmetology that I wouldn't have learned in a beauty school.
