for the 2025-2026 School Year
Hello, Brainiacs and Friends!
Welcome to the land of paper clips and post it notes, expensive vocabulary and descriptive language, curiosity and investigation, claims, and warrants, and evidence, evidence, evidence!! Welcome to a world of work and play, of effort and excellence, organization, smiles, laughter, learning, responsibility, independence, collaboration, caring, and support. We are building a community powered by growth mindset, grit, mindfulness, and leadership. We are building the habits that will help us find and celebrate the success in ourselves and others. We are on an adventure and we have so much to accomplish.
I am thrilled you are here!
My name is Elizabeth Belanger and I am ecstatic to be a 4th Grade Teacher at Wabash Elementary School! This is my eleventh year in the Wentzville School District and teaching 4th grade. We have so much to learn and do! In our classroom we are dedicated to creating confident, curious, and capable learners who are equipped with the critical thinking and problem solving skills that will help us to be successful in and out of the classroom. We work hard together to build a community of caring learners who are committed to the growth and success of each individual and who support one another as we set goals to maximize our potential in all areas: academic, social, and personal.
In addition to my passion for teaching and learning, I love to READ, READ, READ. I'm sure you've noticed that I'm extremely loquacious! (I love language and vocabulary and love to talk and write too much.) 😉 I am also addicted to Pinterest and love cooking and baking. I enjoy planning and organizing and love to spend time with my husband. In our extremely limited free time, my husband and I enjoy going for walks, playing games (video, board, and card games), and traveling!
If you ever have questions, comments, celebrations, or concerns - or if I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to contact me! I try to reach out often, but I always welcome your collaboration and communication when it comes to making our classroom the best place to be AWESOME!
Love and Learning,
Mrs. Belanger
READ (20 minutes)
Nightly expectation.
Students are welcome to read more than 20 minutes, but we do want to encourage reading every night! Students are also welcome and encouraged to read out loud and to take stop and jots to write about their reading. Stop and jots can be done in a journal, on loose leaf paper, or on post it notes and added to their books. In class we will be putting more focus on reading in the genre of our current unit. At home students may choose, but will gain the most if they are in a book that is just right for them. This means they are reading a book they can read smoothly and accurately with expression and one that the understand and can summarize without being too easy.
SUMMARIES (2 per Quarter)
Quarterly expectation.
All 4th Grade students are required to write two summaries each quarter! Summaries should be written about a book read independently by the student for the first time during the quarter the summary is due. Books read should be a just right book (not too hard or too easy, a book students should be able to read smoothly and expressively with good understanding)! One summary will be about a nonfiction informational text and the other will be about a fiction narrative text.
Practice Multiplication Math Facts
As Needed.
To help us succeed in our multiplication units and beyond, it is important that we are fluent with our math facts. Parents and students can choose what this studying looks like and the length that it takes, but for most students this should ideally take 5-10 minutes of sustained practice nightly. Below are some examples of what this might look like. Feel free to switch up the activities to keep practicing fresh and frustration free for everyone.
- Use Flash Cards
- Independently Play XtraMath (either using app or using free online web browser version, one full play session lasts about 5 minutes and is a solid daily routine (students will start by mastering addition facts and graduate to more complex operations as they consistently play)
- Other online multiplication fact practice (ex: https://www.hoodamath.com/games/mathtimedtests.html / https://99math.com/register?role=student / Play Fluency Flight on iReady, accessible via classlink https://launchpad.classlink.com/wsdr4)
- Multiplication fact practice pages (available upon request)
- Watch Multiplication Mash Up Song on Youtube (be sure to alternate with other fluency practice options) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgjCLhoI9Mk
- Play Multiplication War (with basic playing cards) https://www.education.com/activity/article/multiplication_math_war_fourth/
- Have a parent quiz students on math facts students frequently struggle with
- Create your own fun way to practice multiplication facts!
Study States and Capitals
As Needed.
4th Graders are expected to know the names and locations of all 50 states as a part of their Social Studies Curriculum. In addition, students are encouraged to begin practicing their state capitals (a 5th grade standard).
This link will take you to a great online resource for practicing this skill with lots of game modes to choose from. Explore and make this fun!
