Students and teachers will focus more on learning and feedback and less on the letter grade.
MISSING WORK:
In order to help students both take responsibility for AND have the opportunity to learn and grow, in 4th grade ALL missing work will be entered in SIS as a score of 0.
This is NOT PERMANENT. The goal is to help students and parents see the impact of missing work and make it easier to communicate between school and home when work is not being completed on time. Students are welcome and encouraged to complete the work during the quarter it was assigned and turn it in for full credit earned. Once work is turned in and graded, the score will be changed to reflect their actual earned score.
Please keep in mind that work turned in late may take longer to score and report.
It is always best to turn work in ON TIME. This builds good study habits, time management skills, organization, and provides less stress. Most importantly, it ensures that students get the greatest learning benefits from connections and practice happening when the work is assigned!
REDOS:
We care most about students learning and growing from their mistakes! To facilitate this, all classwork and at home assignments earning a score of 65% or lower are automatically eligible for students to REDO.
Redone work is the student's responsibility and should be completed neatly and returned to the teacher.
Work can be completed on a seperate sheet of paper and stapled to the original to turn in if a paper copy or edited digitally if assigned electronically.
Be sure that the teacher is aware if you are requesting a regrade of an assignment.
If the assignment is one where knowing the incorrect answer gives the correct answer (ex: True/False), students will need to write an explanation to show that they understand why their answer was originally incorrect.
Redos may earn full or partial credit back depending on the assignment and quality of the redone work.
Tests and projects earning 65% or lower may also be redone with teacher approval.
CALCULATING AND REPORTING GRADES:
Assignments and assessments are named and weighted by teacher and class to best reflect the learning and individual student mastery of skills
Extra credit, behavior, attendance, etc. are not included in letter grades in the gradebook
Behavior is a critical indicator for academic success and will be reported separately under curriculum marks
Reports cards have not changed. You will still receive report grades as you have in the past.
Students can learn without grades, but not without feedback.
Frequent specific feedback is essential for student learning.
Students need to own their learning.
Data points do not have to be large, summative tests.
Grades and reports should be based on clearly specified learning goals.
Grades reflect what students can do through demonstrations of their thinking, writing, researching, and products, not on compliance.
Students should be given the opportunity to show growth.
Allow for mistakes and revisions.
Students need time to practice and learn from mistakes without a penalty.
Students should be taught and have time to self-assess and reflect on their learning.
Behaviors that impact learning are valued and reported separately.
