Elements of Art & Principles of Design

• Line: A dot that moves
• Color
  • Primary: colors I can’t make on my own. red, yellow, blue
  • Secondary: color made when you mix 2 primary colors.
    • Red +yellow = orange
    • Yellow + blue = green
    • Blue + red = violet
  • Schemes/Families
    • Warm - red, yellow, orange
    • Cool - green, blue, violet
    • Monochromatic - one color (including all the lights & darks)
    • Complementary - 2 colors across cw from one another.
    • Analogous - NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS: 2 to 4 colors next to each other on the cw
• Value: The lightness or darkness of a color
  • Tint: color + white
  • Shade: color + black
  • Tone: color + gray
• Shape: A line that is closed
  • Geometric: shape with rules
  • Organic: shape from nature
  • Freeform: shape without rules
• Texture: The way something feels or looks like it feels.
  • Actual: Way something feels
  • Visual: Texture created by the way something looks, not feels.
• Space: The area in which an artwork is organized.
• Form: A three-dimensional shape

Principles of Design

• Movement: The way your eye moves through a work of art
• Emphasis: Center of interest in a work of art
  • Focal Point: Area where your eye looks first
• Variety: Creating differences
• Balance
  • Symmetrical: Same on both sides
  • Asymmetrical: Different on the sides
  • Radial: when it’s the same around a circle
• Contrast: The differences in color, value, texture, shapes, and other elements. Creates visual excitement and interest.
• Proportion: The size and scale of elements in an artwork.
• Unity; The quality of wholeness created by using the elements of art & principles of design.
