You can use this resource to help you! Reading levels are in bold at the top of the page. I always tell my students their independent levels in letters and numbers- this resource is organized by letter!
This web page is designed to help find the levels of different books. It is run by Scholastic, so there are some books by different publishers that cannot be found; that's when I use the handbook for Leveled Books to help me out!
This resource was created by a teacher and outlines the qualities of books at different levels. It was written to help explain the differences between levels. I use this resource to help me find the levels of books in my classroom library when I can't find them on the Scholastic Book Wizard website.
In third grade, we use our reading notebooks and post-it notes to "stop and jot" about our thinking. This helps me as the teacher see what is going on inside your reader's brain. Here are some STELLAR examples of different stop and jots that I would LOVE to see throughout the school year. Bolded phrases are key words that are often used during these stop and jots.
Example: I think that Karen’s mom will let Karen stay the night at her friend's house because in the text she got all of her homework done and cleaned the dog cage like her mother asked.
Example: I predict that Greg will stop talking about his garden because he just heard a kid say “Gardens are stupid," and also he is trying to be cool and wants to impress the other kids in class.
Example: Andrew is the kind of person that is hopeful. Andrew shows that he is hopeful by saving his money. Andrew also shows that he is hopeful through his conversations with Denny. Finally, Andrew shows that he is hopeful by observing a bird that is stuck in the airport terminal. Andrew is the kind of person that is hopeful.
Example:
The Evil Step-Mother and Hercules are different because Ursula is cruel and Hercules is brave.
For example, the Evil Step-Mother locks Cinderella in the attic so that she can't be seen when the Prince comes to find his princess. Also, the Evil Step-Mother yells at Cinderella to do the laundry, fix the dinner, etc. This shows she is cruel.
For example, Hercules dives into the dangerous water in order to save Meg from dying. Hercules also fights Hades in order to save his family. This shows he is brave.
Example:
In The Absent Author, Josh, Dink, and Ruth Rose are determined to figure out what happened to the author, Wallis Wallace. They notice that Wallis Wallace might have been kidnapped. Josh, Dink, and Ruth Rose searched for clues to find the missing author. They solved the problem when Ruth figured out that Mavis Green was really pretending to be Wallis Wallace. She was pretending to be kidnapped so that she could get ideas for her own mystery book!

Main Idea: Dolphins communicate with each other in many different ways. (Note: this is NOT one word!)
-Detail 1: Dolphins make clicking sounds that they use to sense their surroundings through echolocation.
-Detail 2: Dolphins whistle in order to identify another dolphin.
-Detail 3: Dolphins swim close to each other to strengthen their bond through the sense of touch.
In the section, "Dolphin's Communication," dolphins communicate with each other in many different ways (main idea). For example (transition word), dolphins make clicking sounds that they use to sense their surroundings through echolocation. Also (transition word), dolphins whistle in order to identify another dolphin. Finally (transition word), dolphins swim close to each other to strengthen their bond through the sense of touch. I learned that dolphins communicate just like humans do (push your thinking).
