Home Reading

Read at least 100 minutes a week. However your child can complete that is fine. The only way to become a better reader is to read.

Attached is a copy of the monthly reading log and I will send a copy home as well.

Multiplication Facts

Having multiplication facts memorized in 4th grade is extremely important. All 4th grade math hinges off of multiplication. Your child will really struggle if facts are not mastered. We will test each week over facts and will have fact practice every night.


Reading

Unit 1:

The student will: ● describe a character in depth using specific internal traits. ● provide at least two examples of characters thoughts, words, or actions that support these character traits.

The student will: ● explain how and why a character changes internally across a story. ● provide at least 2 pieces of text evidence based on character relationships, actions, thoughts, and words.

The student will: ● describe the theme or lesson of a text. ● provide at least 2 pieces of text evidence.

To achieve these goals, students will need to be skilled at… ● selecting “just right” texts. ● summarizing a text. ● developing an idea about a character. ● identifying first and third person point of view. ● comparing and contrasting narrator point of view. ● identifying how and why a character changes. ● providing multiple pieces of text evidence to describe a character. ● providing multiple pieces of text evidence to support a theme. ● describing the impact of a setting or event on a character.

The student will:

● select a small moment that unfolds to establish a beginning/middle/end.

● write a lead that establishes a setting and introduces a narrator and/or characters.

● elaborate the setting, situation/topic, and characters.

● utilize author’s craft including dialogue, description, and showing character motivation.

● use a variety of transitions to manage the sequence of event and show the passage of time.

The student will:

● prewrite - brainstorm and plan a first draft

● draft - develop a first draft that generates a main idea and establishes supporting details through clear

introductory, supporting, and concluding paragraphs

● revise and edit - develop and strengthen writing, and edit for language conventions

● publish - produce and publish writing
