During September, the 3rd grade music students will begin a unit where they learn to read and perform various musical rhythms. We will be learning to read and perform dotted half notes, half notes, quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes. At the beginning of October, the students will be taking a unit assessment over rhythms. This unit directly addresses Standard E-1.a Demonstrate learned melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic phrases using expressive elements; Standard E-1.b Demonstrate and connect songs with multiple rhythmic or melodic ostinati in small groups; Standard E-2.c Use notation to accurately perform rhythms and melodic direction; Standard C-1.a Create and document a melodic and/or rhythmic composition using known rhythms and pitches; Standard C-1.b Generate and improvise musical ideas within a musical structure (e.g. rondo); Standard C-1.c Arrange an accompaniment to support a musical idea using known rhythms or pitches; and Standard T-1.b Rhythm: Identify and demonstrate four sixteenth notes, dotted half note.
