Throughout their time in Grade 7 Drama, our students will explore several different areas of the theatrical world, but all of them will help expand collaborative work, creative thinking, and self-confidence. Below are some of the projects we have done in the past to give you an idea of what to expect.
Melodrama is all about being larger-than-life! It features ridiculous plots, bold characters, clear cut morality, and important messages. For this assignment, our students had to write original scripts, rehearse with their groups, and then present their shows to an audience of other grade seven classes. While the shows are happening, all their tech support - lights, sounds, camera, and recordings - are all done by students in real time. It's the final project of our year, and it's always a lot of fun.
All of our students did a fantastic job! See two highlights from our students below to see how much fun this project can be.
This incredibly fun performance features one of the most important lessons in middle school: the importance of proper hygiene and the power of deodorant!
This is a classic melorama storyline: a dastardly villain has kidnapped the innocent, and our heroes are off to save the day. These over-the-top performers had the audience laughing throughout!
When the timing works, our students prepare original performances to be entered into the Manitoba Youth Drama Festival (MYDF). The MYDF has a "Bake Off" challenge where students are challenged to create original videos that were built around six "ingredients". The ingredients that each video had to include this year were the following: an obscure reference to bacon, a moment of regret, a semi-intricate moment of movement, gibberish OR a song, and the colour purple.
You can check out the five of our videos that received Gold adjudication below!
A deadly game of cat and mouse. A killer is on the loose, and it's up to some streetwise detectives to crack the case before the killer strikes again!
A classic Film Noir detective story that has Detective Stan Hartley looking for the person who killed his brother.

In this project, our students create original performance pieces that highlight their hands while exploring one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals outlined by the United Nations.
This is a fabulous cross-curricular project that incorporates elements of Social Studies and English Language Arts. Please check out the the video to learn more about this powerful performance piece.
On occasion, our classes will explore video editing and filmmaking. When we do, the students create "Passion Projects" to share a bit about themselves and to get to know each other better.
Here are just a few of the outstanding pieces that our students were able to create!
Hamza uses some very clever editing to share his passion for horror movies and stand-up comedy
