Students must complete two full semesters of English 9 for their compulsory English 9 credit. One exception is that students enrolled in Kelvin’s French Immersion program will take English 9 for only one semester. Thus, when completing the application form, students select ONE of the courses listed below.
English 9 is a course that challenges students to become more mature and more competent in their use of the language arts of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing. The course will include a variety of Transactional forms, which focus on pragmatics and communication, as well as Literary forms, which focus on aesthetic pleasure and artistry. At Kelvin, English classes emphasize developing strong habits of mind through the study of literature, independent reading, and the creation of thoughtful annotations and marginalia (writing in the margins).
This course is for students who are interested in the study of literature. Students will study literary genres, such as the novel, the short story, poetry, drama (including Shakespearean drama) and non-fiction. Works are selected so that students experience well-crafted literature from different time periods and, possibly, from a variety of backgrounds. Enrichment is to be found in every English class at Kelvin, yet the enrichment in the English 9 Enriched course is of a different kind: it is intended to prepare students for Kelvin’s I.B. (International Baccalaureate) programme, which begins in grade 10, and for the Literary course selections available in the regular academic program in grades 11 and 12. Though not a prerequisite, students interested in I.B. English 10-12 or Literary English 11-12 should take this course.
This course is identical to the regular English 9 course with the exception that students in Kelvin’s French Immersion program take English for one semester.
