Program and Course Information
The study of English Language Arts enables each student to understand and appreciate language and to use it competently and confidently in a variety of situations for communication and personal satisfaction. In English class, students develop as learners and individuals through the language arts and through a diverse and rewarding selection of literature.
Kelvin’s English program explores all aspects of the Manitoba English Language Arts curriculum, and places emphasis on the study of literature, analysis of non-fiction texts, independent reading, and the creation of thoughtful annotations and marginalia. Students are asked to bring self-selected reading material to every class, and they are asked to read with a pen or a pencil in hand.
“Oh, it is only a novel!” replies the young lady, while she lays down her book with affected indifference or momentary shame. - ”It is only Cecilia or Camilla or Belinda"; or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language.
- Jane Austen, from Northranger Abbey
