Films connected to the 8th Grade Core in Mrs. Irvine's class:
12 Angry Men~1957 Oscar Winner…Courtroom drama. This would be used to teach the importance of actual fact vs. opinion and speculation. (Rated G)
The Untold Story of Emmet Louis Till:~This award winning documentary retells the horror of the lynching of a 13 year old boy that was a catalyst to the Civil Rights Movement. This will be used in conjunction with reading, “Getting Away with Murder” by Chris Crow. We will be juxtaposing the poetry of Langston Hughes, “Ask Your Mamma” to examine theme, craft, and tone. (Rated G)
The Count of Monte Cristo: ~This black and white classic came out before movie ratings, 1934. There is no swearing, mild sword play, and no prurient content. This is used to juxtapose the book, which we read as a class, to the movie adaptation. (This is a core based skill)
The Outsiders~this is the older version that is rated PG. This viewing will follow our reading of the book. Students will be asked to engage in rigorous, core-based analysis of the writing compared to the film.
If you have any concerns, please let me know: kiirvine@wsd.net I have copies of the films that I am happy to lend out for parents and families to preview. If you have any concerns, I am happy to provide an alternative activity.
