Credit Make-Up
Ninth grade is a critical year for your student’s education because students begin earning credits towards their high school graduation. Each quarter, a student can earn .25 credit per class. Students who fail a class need to make-up that credit. We encourage ninth grade students to make-up loss/failed credit before they transition to Roy High. English 9, Earth Systems, Agricultural Science, World Geography and Secondary Math 1 are only offered as 9th grade courses and should be made up while the student attends Roy Junior High. To graduate a student must have a minimum of 27 credits. To be on track for graduation, a student needs to leave junior high with a minimum of 6 credits. At Roy Junior High, we offer 2 options to make-up the credit.
If you are in ninth grade and have failed any classes this year, your counselor should meet with you to create a plan for credit make-up. If you have any questions, please ask your counselor.
Option 1 - $35, Directed Study Credit Make-up:
This is through a new online program called Edgenuity. Students will need to work on the course at HOME. If you do not have computer access at home, students may make arrangements with a counselor to come after school and use a computer and/or get help with the course. We also have a computer lab available for all students before and after school and during lunch. The student only has 30 days to complete the course online.
There is also the choice to enroll your student in 8th period to receive additional support with the online course. The student would work in the computer lab with a teacher from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. Talk to your counselor for more information.
Option 2 - $30, Credit Recovery:
In order to help students make up credit in a timely manner, Roy Junior High has instituted the Credit Recovery Program. If a student fails a class within 15%, the teacher will give the student an opportunity to make up that percentage and receive credit. This can be done for any subject that the student failed as long as it was within the 15%. The student must pay the fee, get a form from a counselor and take it to the teacher no later than two weeks after receiving the final grade. The student will then have two weeks to complete the work.
