Groups are provided by the school counselor throughout the school year when we have the need, and enough students to join.
Groups meet six to eight times.
School counselors are not trained therapists. School counselors teach social skills and strategies, rather than provide any forms of therapy.
There are approximately 3 to 6 students placed in a social skills group.
Social Skills - conflict resolution, learning skills, anger and impulse control, reading body language, understanding emotions. Most of the lessons come from the Super Hero Social Skills program.
Mindfulness: Check-in, support, feeling safe at school; coping skills, growth-mindset. Most of the lessons come from The Guss and Gussie Program (Growing up Strong)
Executive Functioning: Learning skills and organization.
Writing my Story: Writing and art activities for expression and self-awareness.
Friendship: Boundaries, healthy relationships, joining-in, handling put-downs, gossip, building a positive self-esteem, boundaries and respect.
Strong Emotions: Anger, coping skills, calming down, mindfulness, dealing with trauma and grief, identifying and dealing with strong emotions, life-vison and goal setting.
Coping Skills, Mindfulness and Resiliency: Anxiety & stress, calming down skills, mindfulness practice, talk about dealing with trauma and grief, dealing with depression and negative emotions, getting rid of perfectionism, thinking errors, feeling safe and comfortable at school, growth mindset.
