Children learn best when they are alert, fit, happy and well.
Daily attendance is required by the State of New Hampshire. It is also vital to a student's success. Student absence for any reason other than illness is strongly discouraged.
If your child is going to be absent from school, please call the office early in the morning to report and explain the reason for the absence. The school voice mail will receive messages before and after school hours: (603)286-8223, or you may email me directly at: kallen@wrsdsau59.org
Please keep all sick children home, especially if they are exhibiting symptoms of severe sore throat, vomiting and/or diarrhea, and/or fever (temperature over 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit). If you are unsure, keep them home and call the school nurse or your primary care provider for guidance. All children with a fever (temperature over 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit) need to stay home until fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication. Likewise, please keep your child home if on an antibiotic for at least 24 hours.
Suggestions on Caring for a Sick Child
Make sure your child gets plenty of rest. 10 - 11 hours a day is recommended.
Encourage fluids; water, soup, 100% juice.
Help your child relax, read a story, give lots of tender loving care.
Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
Teach your child to cough into the elbow, and sneeze into the sleeve to keep hands clean.
Keep a child's environment tobacco free.
Minimize time spent with other children who have colds and flu symptoms.
A yearly flu vaccine is recommended for everyone ages 6 mos. and older
Serve a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables.
During and after an illness it is a good time to clean your child's bedroom and linens, and obtain a new toothbrush.
Clean household surfaces like counter tops, phones, tv remotes, toys and keyboards frequently.
Always consult your family doctor if you have questions specific to your child's health.
APPEARANCE/DISCOMFORT: If your child appears unusually tired, irritable, pale, or has an unusual lack of appetite.
COLDS: If symptoms are mild, your child does not need to be excluded from school. If your child generally feels miserable, has a persistent cough, a cough that is productive of colored mucous or nasal drainage that is yellow or green, keep home and talk to a licensed medical provider if symptoms persist. Remember, if your child is healthy enough to be in school, they need to be able to learn in the classroom, participate in gym class and go out to recess.
FEVER: Temperature of 100.0 or higher is an indication your child could be contagious. Keep them home until temperature is normal for 24 hours without the aid of a fever reducing medication (Tylenol, Advil...).
SORE THROAT: Any sore throat accompanied by a fever needs to be evaluated by a licensed medical professional. Any cases of strep throat need to be treated with antibiotics for 24 hours before your child can return to school.
VOMITING: Don't send your child to school if they have vomited in the last 24 hours.
DIARRHEA: If your child has had three episodes of diarrhea in the past 24 hours, keep them home.
CONJUNCTIVITIS: AKA: Pink Eye. If your child's eye is draining yellow discharge, is red, crusted, puffy and itchy or painful, keep home and see a licensed medical professional. Your child may return to school 24 hours after starting medical treatment for "pink eye". We do understand that that eyes are sometimes swollen and irritated by allergens or a virus, if this is the case, your child is fine to attend school.
RASH: A child with a body rash accompanied by a fever or that is spreading should be taken to a licensed medical provider. The student may return to school when the rash is gone or you have a Dr. note stating it is a "non contagious rash".
HEAD LICE: Your child can not return to school until their hair has been treated with a medicated lice shampoo. Paperwork on cleaning and getting rid of lice and their eggs(nits) will be sent home with the student.
CHICKEN POX: For one week after rash first appears or until vesicles (lesions) have dried.
RINGWORM: Until treatment has begun.
IMPETIGO: out for 24 hours after treatment has begun.
