Pragmatic/Social Language

Here are some ideas to help improve your child's social language at home!

A great way to talk about appropriate social language is through discussions of the way characters behave in various movies and TV shows. Watch these with your child and discuss how the character(s) behaved in expected/unexpected ways. Talk about the consequences of these actions (i.e. someone was offended, people misunderstood, etc.) and discuss ways characters could have handled situations differently/better.

Some great examples are:

Ormie the Pig - A short, funny film about problem solving, perseverance, feelings, and hard work!

Dear Basketball - A short, emotional film about the late Kobe Bryant and is love and passion for basketball.

The Present - my favorite...grab some tissues.

This short Pixar clip has no words. It relies on body language, facial expressions, and emotions. This clip is a lead in to many social language discussions, including perspective taking, think before you act, personal space, expected/unexpected behaviors, size of the problem, etc.

This short clip is an ad from the Olympics that focuses on perseverance and realistic goal setting. This is a skill we work on at every grade level. Parent's may need a tissue for this one too.
