June News
Dear First Grade Families,
The last weeks of school are here! Let’s hope they will not be too hot and steamy. The days are also getting very busy with end-of-the-year projects and programs as we gear up for the “last push” of first grade and for our transition to second grade. I would like to thank you for all your support, positive comments, and helpful suggestions that have made it such a terrific year. It was a pleasure to be your child’s teacher. Thank you, again so much!

HMH Into Reading
We will be revisiting many topics such as retelling and summarizing, making connections, and inferring as a culmination of this year’s learning. At home, please continue to ask the “wh” questions as you read with your child: who, when, where, what and why, the author’s meaning, and recalling important details in sequential order to keep your child’s reading comprehension solid. Please establish a routine for the summer to keep them
reading. They have done so well and the “summer slide” can really impact their start of 2nd grade.
Writing
Our class will be creating an End of the Year School Book for this month’s writing. Memories from first grade and Naquag will be the focus of our writing for our book. Once again, writing throughout the summer is very important to keep your child’s writing skills consistent. Some writing suggestions for your child this summer are keeping a summer and/or vacation journal, writing notes and letters to friends and family, and writing invitations and thank-you notes for birthdays and celebrations throughout the summer months.
Math
In Math, we will focus on Module 6, which is split up into two parts. In part 1, students reason about shapes and their attributes. They compose and decompose shapes, building an understanding of part–whole relationships, including fractions. In part 2, students advance place value understanding through 120, add within 100, and solve more complex word problem types. Apply books for Module 6 will be sent home for extra practice at home through the end of the school year and throughout the summer.
Science/Social Studies
In science, we will identify and discuss the many uses of simple machines to make work easier. In social studies, we will be reading about Flag Day, Betsy Ross and our National Anthem.
Have a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer
Keep reading and learning together!
