October News
Greetings First Grade Families,
I would like to say a thank you to all my first-grade parents for assisting your child with school-related events and documents and having them well prepared for learning each day. The children have done a fine job learning to organize their papers and communication folders in their mailboxes, bins, and backpacks as well as transporting them from school to home and back again. Establishing good organizational skills and responsibility for personal materials is an important goal in first grade. We have made great strides in this area!!
Nitty Gritty Facts
Just a friendly reminder to check your child’s backpack each night for corrected papers, news, practice work, and notes from the PTO, office, and teacher. Thank-you.
Lastly, a written note or a phone call to the office is needed if there is a change in your child’s regular daily dismissal procedure. This practice eliminates any confusion at a very hectic time of day and ensures happy faces as we go out the door for the day.

Curriculum Corner
Into Reading
During this month our class will learn that we are all valuable members of our families and community, and together we make our class a place to learn and grow. We will read books about neighborhoods, and we will learn that different people work together to help make our communities special.
Writing Workshop
This month, students will be using descriptive words to write about what makes their world special.
Eureka Math²
During our math block this month , our first graders will be using word problems to notice relationships between addition and subtraction. Students are introduced to
comparison problem types and they explore ways of finding an unknown part for the first time.
As important as sight words are to reading, math fact fluency is just as important to a strong math sense. Please review our math skills to maintain self-confidence and to gain strength with his/her first-grade math skills.
Science/Social Studies
Our themes for October are fire safety and the seasonal changes as it relates to plants/trees, life cycles, and temperature. We will be discussing the essential question, “What are the characteristics of living and non-living things?” Map skills will be introduced with a focus on identifying N- S- E- W on a map, the compass rose, and the use of map keys.
Enjoy the fall!
