A Symbol of Solidarity: The Transcendent Unity Bracelet Project: A Gift for Good
Writers for Democratic Action of Massachusetts:
The Trump administration has created a perilous time for many communities—immigrants, people of color, women, and more. One small group has been singled out with staggering hostility: transgender Americans.
To show allyship and support the ACLU’s defense of transgender rights, WDA–MA partnered with jeweler Raptor Paddock to create the Transcendent Unity Bracelet—a small act of defiance and a powerful emblem of support. Wearing one says, “We are not backing down.” We are one.
Be seen. Stand together. Make change.
The bracelet’s Moonstone, Rose Quartz, Blue Lace Agate, and White Jade represent intuition, compassion, clarity, and strength—love rising above fear and division. “Transcendent Unity” reflects a community shining brighter together through solidarity. Each bracelet directly supports the ACLU’s LGBTQ rights work.

Event Description
American democracy is in crisis. According to Gallup, only 34% of Americans are satisfied with how it’s functioning—a historic low. Trust in government and institutions is eroding. There is a question facing all of us: Where do we go from here?
Join Jill Lepore, author of We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution, and Danielle Allen, author of Justice by Means of Democracy and founder of Partners in Democracy, for a vital conversation about the state of our democracy, America's foundational documents, and the role that storytelling plays in shaping our nation’s narrative and molding the arguments for political reform. Come with questions and leave with practical ways to get involved in efforts to fight for, write about, and strengthen our democratic systems.

Founded in 1982, Banned Books Week has drawn attention to attempts to remove books and other materials from libraries, schools, and bookstores. Now in its 43rd year, the theme for Banned Books Week 2025 is “Censorship is so 1984. Read for Your Rights.” George Orwell’s cautionary tale 1984 serves a prescient warning about the dangers of censorship, and this year’s theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.

ALA
Since 2021, the American Library Association and PEN America have tracked a sharp escalation in the attempts to ban books, with thousands of unique titles targeted annually. Books by or about LGBTQIA+ individuals and people of color make up nearly half of those titles. The majority of book censorship attempts now originate from organized movements. According to ALA, pressure groups and government entities that include elected officials, board members, and administrators initiated 72% of demands to censor books in school and public libraries in 2024.
