We are SPEAKING UP — Through letters, phone calls, op-eds, and public readings to safeguard core democratic values.

We are STEPPING UP — With bold, creative, and peaceful actions to meet emerging and existing threats to our constitutional rights.

Who We Are

The MASSACHUSETTS chapter of WDA is a collaboration of writers, readers, editors, booksellers, and book lovers standing together to champion democracy and the institutions that embody and protect it. We defend civil liberties, the right to vote and have our votes counted, to gather and protest, to write and read, and to access learning that informs and enriches the lives of all citizens. We battle censorship in all its guises. A nation can only be strong if it invites a multitude of perspectives into its decision-making process, educates its citizens, and treats all individuals, public and private, as equals. 

We are honored to continue the legacy of our Boston-based predecessors who, in 1775, successfully resisted Britain’s autocratic rule and paved the way to the birth of our Democratic nation. We believe in the core values of our constitution, which entitles all individuals to due process and the ineluctable right to defend themselves in a United States court of law.

Our WDA-MA chapter leadership includes many writers who were Founding Members and Supporters of Writers For Blue, a social justice group that raised over $100K for Authors Against Border Abuse, the Equal Justice Initiative, Planned Parenthood, When We All Vote, and the Harris/Walz campaign. Writers for Blue is proud to join WDA– and invites new members from all backgrounds to join us in standing together for our Democracy at this crucial time.
